Anti-Kurdish racism is rarely named in Germany as a category in its own right. In public debates, Kurds appear, at best, as a subcategory, subsumed under “people of Turkish origin” or “people with a migration background.”
On 3 August 2014, the so-called Islamic State (IS) began its attack on the Yazidi population of the Şengal region in northern Iraq. Men and older women were killed, women and girls were enslaved, and boys were taken to training camps. Around 400,000 people were displaced, and tens of thousands fled to Mount Şengal, where they held out for days in temperatures above 50 degrees without water or supplies, until Kurdish forces opened an escape corridor on 14 August.
For days now, thousands of people have been gathering in various cities of Northern Kurdistan (Turkey) to commemorate fallen Kurdish fighters and support their families. What is currently happening is exceptional in this form and, for many, a historic moment.

The history of Kurdistan shows that the destruction of nature does not happen by chance. Traditional agriculture, local seed systems and communally organised forms of economy have in many places been displaced by industrial agriculture, monocultures, the use of chemical inputs and capitalist economic models. The consequences are depleted soils, a decline in biodiversity, water scarcity, and growing dependence on corporations and state structures.
The United Nations has included the armed and security forces of Israel and Russia in its annual report on conflict-related sexual violence for the first time. The 35-page report by UN Secretary-General António Guterres lists 77 state and non-state actors in a dozen countries suspected of committing or being responsible for sexual violence in conflicts.
